Different types of music magazines

MOJO is a music magazine, which focuses on the Elektra genre; it is aimed at an older, more mature audience. The layout is quite cluttered, but organised neatly at the same time. The front cover has more than one image, but the main image is of someone that the audience will recognise instantly.  The mode of address is quite casual. There is a wide variety of fonts used on the front cover, and the bands name is written in their trademark font. The use of fonts makes the cover more aesthetically appealing, not just to the target audience, but to other people as well, because it’s different and stands out. The colour theme for the cover is consistent and clean looking, the colours, red and black, are contrasting and make the cover look bold and interesting.

VIBE is a hip-hop based magazine, featuring the likes of 50 cent. It is aimed at younger people and is a well established magazine. The layout is quite neat, which is unorthodox for this genre of music. The front cover has one image, of an icon the target audience will easily recognise, and will draw the target audience into buying the magazine. The mode of address for the magazine is informal, as typically it is a younger audience that listens to hip-hop. All the fonts used are the same, making the layout appear neat, but some of the writing varies in size, colour and boldness, making it more appealing to the eye. The colour scheme on the cover is consistent, and the main colours used are white and yellow. Red is also used, to make bits of the writing stand out more than the rest

RWD is a music magazine that covers a variety of genres, it focuses on Grime, Hip Hop, Dubstep, Funky, Pop, R&B and House. It normally has one main image that will appeal to the target audience. The title is simple and bold so that it stands out, and people can remember it. On this particular issue ‘Tinchy Stryder’ is written in a font that stands out, and it also gives us an idea of what sort of music he does. The layouts to the magazine are quite simple, and appear to be aimed at an older audience. As it covers a wide selection of music genres, the target audience is also large, so it needs to be able to appeal to all of these people. I think the layout is effective and draws attention to the magazine.

Kerrang is a music magazine focusing on the rock genre, the layout of the cover is cluttered and unorganised. There is more than one image on the cover, but the main image of a well known rock icon, that will appeal to the target audience. The mode of address of the magazine is informal.
There is a range of fonts used on the cover of this issue of Kerrang, this is to make it more interesting to look. Green Day is written in their trademark font, so the audience can easily establish who it is. Again, the use of colour is consistent. Mainly using whites and yellows, with the odd bit of green added in to make certain bits of writing stand out.
